About This Tour in Mendoza

Luján de Cuyo is the historic heart of Argentine wine and the birthplace of Malbec as the world now knows it. It sits just 30 to 40 minutes south of Mendoza city, which makes it the best full-day private wine tour for travellers who want serious wineries without a long drive. Peter curates each departure personally, choosing three houses according to what is happening in the cellar and vineyard on your date.

Why Luján de Cuyo matters

In 1993 Luján de Cuyo became the first appellation of origin (DOC) in Argentina, and for good reason. Italian, Spanish and French immigrant families planted here more than a century ago, and many of those old vines still produce. At 2,600 to 3,600 feet (800-1,100 m), on deep alluvial soils, the wines are rounder, deeper and more velvety than high-altitude Uco Malbec — think plum, violets, sweet spice and silky tannins. Key districts include Agrelo, Perdriel, Vistalba, Mayor Drummond and Chacras de Coria.

What the day looks like

Hotel pickup in Mendoza city or Chacras de Coria between 9:00 and 9:30 AM in a private air-conditioned SUV.

  • First winery (10:00 AM): a historic estate — vineyard walk, old concrete vats or a century-old cellar, then a guided tasting of 3 to 5 wines.
  • Second winery (12:30 PM): lunch among the vines, either a full paired menu or a lighter regional lunch.
  • Third winery (3:30 PM): a boutique or family producer for a final tasting, often with reserve and single-vineyard Malbec.
  • Return: back at your hotel around 5:30-6:00 PM.

Which wineries will I visit?

Rather than a fixed circuit, Peter books the combination that gives you the most depth on the day. Houses we work with in Luján regularly include Lagarde, Pulenta Estate, Achaval-Ferrer, Susana Balbo, Durigutti, Benegas, Finca Decero, Alta Vista and Ojo de Agua. Profiles of each are in our guide to the wineries of Mendoza.

What’s included

Private late-model SUV with a bilingual English/Spanish driver-guide, all winery and lunch bookings, bottled water, insurance and hotel pickup and drop-off. The Standard option (from USD 130 per person) leaves tasting fees and lunch to be paid at each winery; the Full option (USD 220 per person) includes all tastings and a full paired lunch.

Practical details

  • Duration: approximately 8 hours, door to door.
  • Drive time: 30-40 minutes from Mendoza city; 10-20 minutes between wineries.
  • Group size: private departures from 2 people.
  • Best season: year-round; harvest runs February to April.
  • What to bring: sunscreen, a hat and comfortable shoes for the vineyard.

Luján de Cuyo or Uco Valley?

Luján is history, old vines and classic Malbec, with far less driving. Uco Valley is altitude, dramatic Andean scenery and modern winemaking, 1h30 away. With two days, do both — Luján first, then Uco, so the tastings build instead of repeating.

Send Peter your dates and group size and you’ll get a proposed itinerary with specific wineries named, not a generic package.
